About Sentence Counter & Readability Analysis
Our free online sentence counter analyzes written content to determine total sentence count, average sentence length, paragraph counts, and sentence variety. By detecting overly complex or run-on sentences, this tool helps writers, students, authors, and copywriters improve the clarity and cadence of their text.
How Sentences Are Identified
A sentence boundary is detected by terminal punctuation marks (periods ., exclamation points !, and question marks ?) followed by whitespace or line breaks. The parser intelligently protects common abbreviations (such as Mr., Dr., e.g., i.e., and etc.) and decimal numbers so they don't trigger false sentence breaks.
Ideal Sentence Length for Readability
According to the American Press Institute and readability studies (such as Flesch Reading Ease), readers understand more than 90% of text when sentences average 14 words. Comprehension drops below 50% when average sentence length exceeds 25 words.
